ROLE SUMMARY

The Legal Fellow will primarily report to the Legal Counsel or Senior Legal Counsel and support all legal tasks related to the investment activities of Renew Capital, and support in the setting up of legal structures that will support legal functions for portfolio companies under the network, with support from outside counsel. This is a nine-month program designed to provide hands-on experience in a dynamic investment environment.

Working with fast-growing businesses means that the Legal Fellow will need to learn quickly, be capable of handling a diverse range of tasks and take increasing responsibility. Candidates should be well versed in laws as they relate to investments, international trade, corporate or commercial law and/or mergers and acquisitions and have the ability to deliver creative legal solutions that take into account the realities of a U.S. / Western investment firm operating in Africa.

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in the coordination of legal due diligence, documentation and closing of investment deals
  • Assist with all legal research work and legal services across a broad range of business services
  • Draft and copy-edit investment contracts
  • Prepare legal documents and correspondence with suppliers, service providers, contractors and other business counterparts
  • Monitor proposed or newly enacted policies, laws, regulations and ongoing compliance issues that will impact the business, activities and operations, and advise on and implement necessary compliance program
  • Provide legal support in contentious matters including collecting information and evidential materials
  • Offer comprehensive legal support as required by the organization
  • Staying up-to-date on trends, innovations, investment products and market developments in the region that impact Renew Capital’s pipeline and portfolio

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in law from a local university (CGPA of 3.5 and above, or equivalent)
  • A primary interest in company and investment laws;
  • Analytical and project management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to write and communicate in English
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts to a diverse lay audience
  • Demonstrated enduring passion for harnessing the power of business for good

Location

The position is based in Kenya, Morocco, Ghana or Nigeria
