ROLE SUMMARY
We are looking for competent consultants with 10 to 15 years of experience in the area of blue economy, climate adaptation and waste management (more specifically plastics) that have also competencies regarding start-ups, preferably in Mozambique, Malawi and Ghana. The consultant is an important addition to the project team by bringing in knowledge that is key for delivering high-quality outputs.
- Project Duration: A maximum of 300 days, framework contract(s) on call-down basis for delivery of specialist input.
- Start Date: November, 2024
- End Date: July, 2027
- Location: Mozambique, with occasional (virtual) support to the Ghana and Malawi teams
Objective: To provide specialist input into the Startup Preparation for Investment Training (SPRINT) training program through the development and delivery of specialist courses related to the blue economy, climate adaptation and waste management (in particular of plastic), directed to start-ups, as well as ecosystem support organizations (ESOs) that are active in the area of entrepreneurship incubation and acceleration. The consultancy services also include advisory services to start-ups.
SCOPE OF WORK AND DELIVERABLES
1. Develop course materials for start-ups
Activities:
- Desk review and country updates on course content that might be relevant for start-up participants in the program;
- Based on the types of start-ups that are participating in the SPRINT courses, design course materials that will contribute positively to their businesses in terms of environmental performance.
Deliverable:
- Course materials that can be integrated in SPRINT courses, as well as stand-alone short training opportunities.
2. Enhance knowledge of ESOs in supporting start-ups with operations in the areas of blue economy, climate adaptation and waste management
Activities:
- Analyze relevant content that could be presented to ESOs in Mozambique, Ghana and Malawi to enhance their competencies;
- Provide regular updates on interesting in-country, but potentially also international initiatives of start-ups and ESOs;
- Ensure that selected ESOs receive due professional advice regarding the specialist areas of blue economy, climate adaptation and waste management while working with start-ups that are potentially relevant to the Norad project.
Deliverable:
- Building on the work that Renew Capital is undertaking in this area, tailor specialist coaching and mentoring to selected start-ups, ESOs and other stakeholders relevant to the project in the space of blue / green economy.
- Presentation to Renew Capital staff on the same.
3. Ecosystem work
Activities
- Identify ESO's in the blue / green economy and waste management, that can be targeted for ESO building.
- Support design and management of collaboration with local Tech Incubation Partner.
- Identify at least 5+ tech-incubation partners; learn about and capture their programmatic activities.
- Develop a partnership agreement concept and design the program; propose best-fit partner.
- Manage relationship between tech-incubator and the SPRINT startups.
- Support SPRINT trainers in identifying the tech needs of the startup.
Deliverable:
- SPRINT + Tech Incubator partnership designed and launched
- Startups matched with tech talent to develop digital business solutions
4. Provide specialist advice to selected engagement events with start-ups and ESOs
Activities
- Provide suggestions to ESO engagement events in the areas of (start-up activity of) blue economy, climate adaptation and waste management;
- Host selected parts of such events whenever relevant.
Deliverable:
- Interesting (components of) events for ESOs that are inspiring interested start-ups in the blue economy, climate adaptation and waste management.
- Presentation to Renew Capital staff on what has been achieved by the companies and the methodologies that were most effective.
5. Provide specialist input into the development of Renew Capital’s new blue/green economy investment thesis
Activities:
- Desk study on successful investments in startups in the blue/green economy and waste management elsewhere in the world.
- Identify lessons learned and options for the way forward for the NORAD project countries.
Deliverable:
- Building on Renew Capital’s investment thesis, apply specialist input through the development of a 4-5 page paper to ensure that Renew Capital’s investments in the green/blue economy are primed for success.
- Presentation to all Renew Capital staff on the same.
6. Develop relevant performance indicators with regards to environmental standards
Activities:
- Create assessment indicators for course evaluation surveys regarding blue economy, climate adaptation and waste management aspects to capture essential data for project impact measuring;
- Ensure the project evaluation plan includes relevant performance indicators regarding enhancements of participating start-ups and ESOs with regards to environmental operating standards or business models;
- Undertake regular reviews to assure continuous improvement of KPIs.
Deliverable:
- Relevant performance indicators on blue economy, climate adaptation and waste management for SPRINT courses and other project activities, aligned to current Renew Capital efforts in these areas.
- Presentation to Renew Capital staff on the same.
REPORTING AND COORDINATION
The consultant will report to the Manager of the Norad Program. Regular check-ins will be held to ensure the project stays on track, depending on the respective assignments.
PAYMENT TERMS
Payment will be made in monthly installments as per the amount of work delivered and duly approved:
- Invoice submitted by the last day of the month
- Payments may take up to 15 business days to process.
