Overview of the Role

We are seeking an experienced Controller, responsible for all aspects of day-to-day financial management, including global accounting operations (US, Canada, Europe), financial reporting, and internal controls. Reporting to the CFO the Controller will be responsible for leading the accounting team both in the US, Canada and Europe. Candidate must be a hands-on manager and with experience in a global, fast-paced, high growth environment.

A key role in the company, we are looking for a positive, proactive, enthusiastic leader with software experience, US GAAP knowledge, and ability to set up systems. Upshop uses NetSuite for its ERP and Salesforce for its CRM.

Responsibilities

  • Complete all period-end reporting requirements (month-end, quarter-end, etc.) for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Responsible for day-to-day accounting operations, including but not limited to AP, AR, payroll, cash management.
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Manage and supervise 3 direct reports as well as outside contractors/advisors as required
  • Revenue recognition experience for both SaaS and Perpetual software licensing models under ASC 606 (or IFRS 15).
  • Research and provide guidance on application of technical accounting issues.
  • Develop strategy for future system implementations and enhancements/upgrades
  • Work with the CFO and other leadership on M&A due diligence.
  • Work closely with FP&A, Revenue Operations, and functional business unit leaders to provide actionable insight and analysis, both ad hoc and regular.
  • Partner with FP&A and business unit leaders to develop predictable and credible financial reporting.
  • Provide quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting to ensure compliance with GAAP, tax, and necessary regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Improve the systems and protocols to maintain good cost controls, healthy budgeting and oversee disciplined AR/AP management.
  • Manage annual audit and preparation of consolidated financial statements in accordance with US GAAP.
  • Work with international subsidiary external accountants to ensure compliance with local statutory requirements as well as reporting for consolidated financials including transfer pricing mechanisms and intercompany eliminations.
  • Sales tax and federal and state income tax filings, international tax, and other compliance matters.

Qualifications

  • Prove working experience as a Controller in a high growth environment with SaaS software industry experience
  • A formal accounting education and membership with an accounting body, CPA and/or CMA preferred.
  • High ethical standards
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles & procedures applied in a practical sense
  • Experience with creating financial statements, month-end/year end close processes
  • M&A accounting experience is a plus.
  • Experience with NetSuite a big plus.
  • Exceptional Interpersonal and communication skills, a collaborative style and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated initiative and the ability to work effectively within time constraints
