Thesis: Assessment of Hydrokinetic Turbine System

About SeaPattern

At SeaPattern, we’re enabling the transition to renewable energy by unlocking the full potential of hydropower. Our modular, floating hydrokinetic turbines are placed in an optimized microgrid, increasing the energy output of existing hydropower plants without new infrastructure or environmental harm. The system is scalable, affordable, and non-invasive. Our technology also delivers sustainable power in remote areas and mission-critical energy solutions for disaster relief and defense.

SeaPattern develops hydropower technologies for reliable and sustainable energy generation. To enhance design, materials, and performance, we offer thesis opportunities in several technical areas, including blade design, surface treatment, bearing lifetime, and system sustainability.

About the Thesis Work
Depending on the selected topic, the work may involve mechanical design, materials analysis, or sustainability assessment. The exact scope will be tailored to the student’s background and the project’s needs. The areas below are examples rather than fixed project outlines:

  1. Surface Treatment and Coatings: Investigate how different surface treatments or paint systems affect blade performance, growth, and corrosion resistance. Includes arranging accelerated testing and functional evaluation of blades.
  2. Bearings in Submerged Environments: Define requirements, analyze existing solutions, and perform lifetime or accelerated testing of bearings, gaskets, and housings for underwater applications.
  3. Blade Assembly Concepts: Explore and evaluate alternative blade joining methods (e.g., welding, friction welding, cold pressing) and develop proof of concept for improved manufacturability and performance.
  4. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and System Sustainability: Conduct system breakdown, boundary definition, data compilation, and environmental analysis to identify major impact areas and recycling potential across the product life cycle.

Each project includes requirement definition, analysis, simulation, result evaluation, and improvement proposals.

Goal/Purpose
The thesis should provide SeaPattern with actionable insights and validated concepts that improve product performance, durability, or sustainability, supporting continued technical development and innovation. Projects can be performed individually or in pairs.

About SeaPattern

SeaPattern was founded in Sweden by a team of visionary scientists, innovators and engineers who shared a common vision - to unleash the power of hydropower.

We want to make hydropower more efficient, sustainable and accessible. Our modular, floating hydrokinetic turbines are placed in an optimized microgrid, increasing the energy output of existing hydropower plants without new infrastructure or environmental harm. Our solution is scalable, affordable, and non-invasive, and can also serve as a standalone run-of-the-river solution in areas where traditional hydropower isn’t viable.

This kind of energy is exactly the kind of energy solution the world needs - fast, scalable, and affordable. The future of clean energy won’t build itself. Let’s get to work together - join our mission!
