About RWI and the Europe Office

The Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI) has worked for nearly forty years to promote respect for human rights through research, education and capacity development. We believe that by supporting practitioners and bringing people together around human rights, on the basis of new knowledge and tools developed, connecting theory and practice, we contribute to lasting human rights change. If you, like us, are passionate about achieving human rights change and want to work in a dynamic international environment, this internship may be for you.

RWI is an independent academic institution established at Lund University in Sweden in 1984. We combine multi-disciplinary human rights research with education, capacity building, and outreach to contribute to a wider understanding of, and respect for, human rights and humanitarian law. We work with four thematic areas within human rights: ‘access to justice’, ‘non-discrimination and inclusion’, ‘human rights and the environment’ and ‘business and human rights’. Since the early 1990s, we have cooperated with a wide range of institutions and organisations in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, to advance the practical application of human rights around the world. Our cooperation is characterised by mutual trust, long-term commitment, and achievement of common objectives. Currently, we have offices in Harare, Jakarta, Lund, Nairobi, Phnom Penh, and Yerevan.

RWI’s Europe Office (EO) is managed from Lund and currently focuses initiatives and programme development in Ukraine and the wider Europe region, covering the Eastern Partnership, Western Balkans as well as EU countries. For more information, see https://rwi.lu.se/europe-landing-page/.

We expect you to start in late October 2024 and continue until January 2025, though the exact start and end dates are negotiable. A longer internship period is also possible, depending on mutual agreement. The internship is to be conducted in person in Lund, and can be either part-time (20 hours per week) or full-time (40 hours per week). Please indicate your availability in the application.

During the internship, you will gain hands-on experience in project planning, implementation, and monitoring, as well as gain valuable insights into how multi-country partnership and collaboration works in practice. You will also be supported by a supervisor as well as get an opportunity to be a part of an inspiring workplace with employees driven by a mission to promote respect for human rights. While the internship is unpaid, we do provide a range of valuable resources to support your learning and development. You will have access to a computer, office space, and the opportunity to learn from different projects, donor requirements (EU and Sida), engage and exchange ideas with other interns and staff.

Main tasks:

  • Assist with conducting qualitative research using surveys, interviews, and document analysis.
  • Help develop learning and communications content related to the project for our website, social media, and learning platforms.
  • Support the planning, implementation, monitoring, documentation, and reporting processes of the project.
  • Maintain and update stakeholders and events list, and identify trends related to the project.
  • The above tasks are indicative and to be aligned with the intern; additional tasks may be assigned as needed.
