Process Engineer – Stacking & Cell Assembly

We are building a state-of-the-art Gigafactory that will be one of the largest cell production facilities in Europe. We are now looking for Process Engineers within Stacking & Cell Assembly area to join our Engineering team.

Volvo Cars is one of the most well-known and respected car brands in the world. Northvolt is a leading supplier of sustainable, high-quality battery cells and systems, dedicated to delivering the world’s greenest lithium-ion battery.

Together, we have formed a joint venture, NOVO Energy, to power the next generation of pure electric Volvo cars.

We are currently seeking engineers to play a pivotal role in our Engineering team, working in the Stacking & Cell Assembly area of Battery Cell Production. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of battery technology, contributing to the development of next-generation energy storage solutions as well allowing us to lead the process and equipment development of our projects.

Our Engineering team is a coalition of specialists, engineers and technical project managers. Together they work toward the shared goal of scaling and industrializing the production of our lithium-ion battery technology that will help Volvo transform into a pure electric car manufacturer. The team is currently focused on designing, planning and equipping a world class Gigafactory in time for start of production in 2026.

What you will do
In this role you will be responsible for working with suppliers and a cross functional NOVO team for a specific area of Stacking & Cell Assembly process and equipment. The teams within Stacking & Cell Assembly are focusing on designing, testing and setting-up mass production lines for Lithium-ion prismatic cells. You will contribute on specific equipment deployment through their entire cycle life: from initial design up to hand-over to the manufacturing team.

You will be given the chance to expand and develop your knowledge as a process engineer focusing on fast-automation technologies and become a specialist within battery cell manufacturing.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead design reviews and FMEAs with suppliers and approve machine design concepts, technical drawings and documentation.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to suppliers to ensure equipment quality, technical specifications and CE safety standards are met.
  • Own and drive a focus topic within the field of Stacking or Cell Assembly with the team as support.
  • Develop and issue DOEs and schedule process and equipment trials at supplier sites as well at NOVO site
  • Lead the definition and release of standards for manufacturing processes based on the trials and lessons learned performed on the way
  • Own and lead commissioning activities on site and support handover to production.
  • Actively participating and sharing all relevant information within a cross functional team on a regular basis.

Your background
We are looking for you who are a curious and persistent team player with a track record of leading process improvement projects in a production environment. You approach problem-solving with a “can-do” attitude, discipline and thrive in a fast-paced environment. In order to be a successful person at NOVO Energy we believe you have the following background:

  • MSc. in Engineering or higher degree in mechanical, chemical, industrial, or electrical engineering or equivalent.
  • Deep knowledge in mass production and knowledge of high-tech production machines.
  • Experience of performing FAT, SAT and handover to Operations.
  • Industrial experience in demanding industrial environments.
  • High proficiency in English, proficiency in additional languages is considered advantageous.
  • Previous experience from working in a multi-cultural environment.

It is meritorious if you have:

  • Knowledge and experience of vision systems or MES and familiarity with manufacturing index (OEE and other KPIs).
  • Previous experience in battery Stacking or Cell Assembly process.
  • Experience in fast-automation and clean industries, such as pharma or food.
  • Experience in design and procurement of Stacking and Cell Assembly equipment.
  • Experience in designing fast-automation equipment for similar industries.
