Job Description

We are looking for a self-motivated student to join us in our mission to contribute to a greener future by writing the thesis for our passionate Cathode Development team based in Västerås R&D Labs.

Background

Cathode active material (CAM) is one of the key components that drives Li-ion battery performance. Northvolt CAM development team focus on the next generation chemistry including high-nickel composition.

Suggested scope

The project’s main aim is to review and assess calcination technology developments in the Cathode Active Material manufacturing and their potential applicability in the process currently used by Northvolt.

Key components of the project would include but not limited to:

  • Conduct a full industrial, academic and patent review of Calcination Technology Developments. Looking into process technologies, equipment technologies for use in battery materials, powder processing applications or other relevant/related fields.
  • Evaluation of technologies based on Capex, Opex, design safety, ease of use/adoption to identify the best 3 alternatives to Northvolt’s calcination technology.
  • Conduct a full industrial, academic and patent review of Calcination Technology Developments. Looking into additive technologies for use in battery materials, powder processing applications or other relevant/related fields.
  • Narrow down and understand where the abovementioned applications could be integrated into Northvolt’s current and future manufacturing process whilst understanding potential impacts on the product (layered oxide).
  • Propose and validate theoretically the use-case.
  • Design a potential & simple test rig to carry preliminary testing (at Northvolt site or at Academic Partner)
  • Run experiments, collect data and analyze the results
  • Propose potential way forwards and applications to Cathode Active Material Manufacturing
