Data Platform Engineer

We usually respond within three days

Matsmart-Motatos is a different kind of food store, challenging the thought of sustainable consumption. We’re a European grocery e-commerce, aiding the sustainable reform of our food system by giving everyone a chance to save our planet in an effortless way. We partner with food and FMCG companies to save products at risk of going to waste by re-selling them at discounted prices directly to consumers: sustainable, affordable and accessible to all.

Today, our shops are open in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany and Austria. Working at Matsmart-Motatos, you will join our fight against food waste and contribute to making the world a better place.

Role Overview

At Motatos, our data team can only move as fast as the infrastructure that supports it. That’s where you come in.

We work with massive amounts of data - powering one of Sweden’s biggest e-commerces - and every insight, model, and decision depends on strong foundations. Your role is to make sure those foundations are rock solid.

We’re looking for a data platform engineer who thrives on building infrastructure at scale. From Terraform to CI/CD pipelines, cloud resources to data platforms, you’ll design and maintain the systems that let our team deliver with speed and confidence.

This isn’t a background role -it’s the enabler. You’ll be the backbone of the data team, making sure data flows securely, reliably, and efficiently so that the rest of the team can focus on creating value. Sounds interesting? Contact us!

Responsibilities

  • Architect, provision, configure, and operate Snowflake infrastructure on Azure (warehouses, databases, schemas, roles, permissions, external stages) using Terraform or equivalent IaC.

  • Manage associated Azure cloud infrastructure required by the data platform: storage (e.g. Blob / Data Lake Gen2), networking, identity & access (Azure Entra ID, managed identities), secret management, virtual networks, etc.

  • If needed, support occasional Google Cloud components: e.g. storage buckets or services, IAM / permissions in GCP, etc.

  • Build, maintain, and enhance CI/CD pipelines / workflows for infrastructure (say Terraform on Azure) and data assets (schemas, warehouse changes, roles, permissions).

  • Embed security & governance: RBAC, least privilege, audit logging, compliance, secrets management. Use Azure’s tools (Key Vault, Azure AD roles) to secure credentials and access.

  • Monitor & optimize performance and cost for Snowflake usage on Azure: warehouse sizing, auto-suspend / scale, query performance, usage patterns; also watch Azure costs for storage / networking / compute.

  • Setup observability & alerting: logs, metrics, query latency, failures; detect drift in infrastructure or configuration. Use Azure monitoring tools, Snowflake’s built-in metrics, etc.

  • Work with data engineering / analytics folks to support ingestion pipelines, schema evolution, transformations; ensure dev/test/prod environments aligned and reproducible.

  • Document architecture, standards, deployment / rollback procedures, best practices; ensure recoverability, fault tolerance, and environment parity.

Required Qualifications

  • 3-5+ years (or more, depending on seniority) in data platform or infrastructure engineering.

  • Strong experience with Snowflake, in particular on Azure: designing schemas, warehouses, roles/permissions, external stages, performance tuning.

  • Proven experience with Terraform (or comparable IaC) to manage Snowflake and Azure resources.

  • Deep knowledge of Azure services relevant for data infrastructure: Azure Blob / Data Lake, Azure Entra ID, Key Vault (secrets), networking (VNets), permissions; familiarity with Google Cloud is a plus.

  • Strong SQL skills; experience optimizing queries, performance tuning, working with semi-structured data.

  • Good Python skills

  • Experience designing and operating CI/CD pipelines (Terraform + Snowflake + Azure).

  • Being familiar with Docker and containerized solutions

  • Solid security mindset: access control, encryption, auditing, least privilege, secret management.

  • Ability to make trade-offs between cost, performance, complexity; experience with cost monitoring / cost management in Azure & Snowflake.

  • Experience working end-to-end: from raw data ingestion to clean, transformed, modeled data for dashboards, ML, operational use.

  • Good communication; can work across teams (Cloud / DevOps / Security / Data Engineering).

The Motatos way

We’re not only a different kind of food store, with a burning passion for saving already-produced stuff. Above all else, we're a company filled with unlike-minded people who constantly turn our food-saving dreams into reality and are the creators of a remarkable company culture (humble hint: ours).

The Motatos way is all about being human, caring for each other, disrupting to challenge the status quo, and taking action to make things happen because, at the end of the day, food doesn't save itself.

About Matsmart-Motatos

Matsmart-Motatos is an e-commerce and impact company that saves already-produced food and consumer products from going to waste. How? Simply by buying surplus from FMCG suppliers and selling it cheap online to cost- and climate-conscious consumers in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, and Austria. A double win for the planet as well as people’s wallets.
