Founding Energy Projects Engineer

About Loadwise
Data centers are becoming one of the fastest-growing electricity consumers in history, especially AI and HPC clusters. At the same time, power systems are increasingly driven by renewable generation, creating volatility in prices, carbon intensity, and grid conditions. Loadwise builds software that allows compute infrastructure to respond intelligently to these energy signals. We connect data center infrastructure directly to real-time energy markets and grid signals, enabling cost-optimal and carbon-aware operation of data center energy assets.
Our goal is simple: Make sure the infrastructure powering humanity's most powerful technology runs on humanity's best and cheapest energy source.
The Role
Our first customer projects become the references everything else is built on. We are looking for a Founding Energy Projects Engineer to make sure each one lands, and lands well.
Today that means running engagements with data center operators, developers and utilities: understanding what they need, translating it into something we can deliver, coordinating whoever else has to be involved, and making sure it actually works. You are the person the customer calls, and the person who understands what we have to build next.
A concrete example of what is on the desk right now: a data center operator wants to market their backup generators. That involves the operator, an aggregator, the grid operator and their electricity supplier. Four parties, four sets of requirements, one timeline. Someone has to hold that together, understand enough about balancing markets to know when an answer does not add up, and keep it moving without either founder in every call.
As one of the first people building Loadwise, you will work directly with both founders, our Founding Data Scientist and our Founding Systems Engineer. This is not a software engineering role: you will not build the models or integrations yourself. You own the customer, the project and the outcome, in a company where that relationship decides what gets built.
Excellence here means execution, not slide decks. If your projects tend to move when others stall, you will fit right in.
What the first six months look like: By month six, you run customer projects independently, including at least one multi-party engagement. You run customer workshops on your own, and the lessons from each project are captured in a playbook that makes the next engagement faster than the last.
What great looks like: Good is a project delivered on time. Great is a customer who asks for you by name on the next one, a grid operator who takes your call because your last answer was right, and a playbook the next hire can run without you.
The core of this role is well-defined. What happens beyond it is up to you.
What You'll Work On
Customer Projects & Delivery
-
Run customer projects from kickoff to delivery, with real ownership of timeline and outcome
-
Prepare and run customer workshops together with the founders, and increasingly on your own
-
Turn what we learn in each project into something reusable, so the second engagement is faster than the first
Stakeholder Coordination
-
Coordinate external stakeholders: grid operators, suppliers, aggregators, planners and OEMs
-
Keep multi-party projects moving without formal authority over anyone in them
Energy Modelling & Requirements
-
Build simplified energy and business models for data center sites, enough to make a decision on
-
Gather and maintain requirements on live projects, and bring them back to our product and engineering team
What We're Looking For
You likely come from a background in electricity supply, utilities, grid operators, energy consultancies, or an energy-adjacent startup.
Background
- A strong academic track record in engineering, energy economics, physics or a related quantitative field
Energy Markets
-
At least five years of experience in the energy sector
-
Working knowledge of how European power markets function. You do not need to be a trader, but you should know what a balancing group is and why prequalification takes time
Project & Analytical Skills
-
Proven ability to keep a multi-party project moving without formal authority over anyone in it
-
You turn incomplete site data into a robust decision basis fast, using LLMs and AI tools to model scenarios, test assumptions and stress-test the result, and you can defend every assumption in front of a customer
Collaboration & Mindset
-
German and English, both good enough for a technical conversation with a Netzbetreiber
-
You treat AI tools as genuine force multipliers and use them to move faster
-
You hold the bar on every detail, because in a four-party project the one assumption nobody checked is the one that breaks it
Nice to Have
-
Experience with data centers, industrial loads or large connection projects
-
Having worked somewhere small enough that the process did not exist yet
What We Offer
Competitive Base & Meaningful Equity
We expect you to act like an owner, which means we offer an above-market compensation package for a seed-stage company: a strong base salary and equity stake.
Relocation Support
We are building this in Berlin (Hybrid / On-site). This role lives on customer meetings and close work with the founders. If you are the right fit but not based here yet, we support your relocation.
Your Setup
We cover the licenses and tools that keep you moving fast. Top-of-the-line hardware, no approval process.
High Autonomy, Zero Bureaucracy
You own our customer projects end to end, on projects that decide where the company goes, in a market that is being defined right now, in regulation and in practice, with us in the room.
Our Process
We keep it lean. Three stages, no more than four weeks from first call to offer.
To apply, send us your CV and tell us about the most complicated project you kept alive, and what you did that others would not have.
