The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Senior Manager to manage fundraising, outreach, events, and cultivation, develop relationships with donors and prospects and represent the work of Human Rights Watch within Australia and specifically in Melbourne. This is a one year fixed-term, part-time position for parental leave coverage, with an anticipated start in December 2024. The Senior Manager will report to the Associate Director of Development and Outreach based in Sydney and will work closely with Senior Associate for Development and Outreach, and the Australia Director, both based in Sydney.

The successful candidate will mobilize support from donors and prospects in Melbourne, including the Melbourne Committee – a network of close supporters who support fundraising, outreach, networking, and cultivation initiatives.

As the Australia office of Human Rights Watch is based in Sydney, the successful candidate will be expected to work from home (WFH) in Melbourne, with periodic visits to the Sydney office throughout the year. This position will work an 0.8 (80%) schedule, or roughly 30 hours per week. We aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in structuring the 0.8 position in a way that meets the needs of both the ideal candidate and the team.

Responsibilities:

1. Conduct a market/ feasibility review on the Melbourne funding landscape for Human Rights Watch;
2. Oversee production, fundraising, outreach, and cultivation of events in Melbourne, including the Voices for Justice annual fundraising event, private dinners, receptions and briefings;
3. Work in partnership with the Associate Director, Development and Outreach, based in Sydney, to implement the fundraising strategy for Australia;
4. Represent the work of Human Rights Watch to existing and prospective supporters to continue building financial support in Melbourne by managing your own portfolio of donors and soliciting major gifts and general support funds in collaboration with the Sydney team;
5. Manage the Melbourne Committee, directing the group’s efforts to maximize opportunities to share the work of Human Rights Watch, engage existing and potential donors, and develop peer-to-peer networking opportunities. Keep the members engaged through regular meetings, communication, and initiatives geared toward maximizing fundraising results;
6. Work together with Associate Director in overseeing expenditure budget, ensuring appropriate allocation of resources and regular monitoring of expenses; and
7. Incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion values and initiatives into the work of the Australia team;
8. Foster an inclusive, creative, and positive work environment, encouraging diverse perspectives and participation in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, while proactively addressing bias, discrimination, and microaggressions;
9. Model inclusive behavior and consistently adhere to HRW's internal values and;
10. Perform other responsibilities as required,

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a relevant field such as international relations, social sciences, communications and marketing, law, event management or related studies is required.

Experience: A minimum of five years of fundraising/event planning is desirable.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Familiarity with the Melbourne philanthropic community;
2. Ability to effectively build relationships and engage with a variety of donors, committee members and colleagues, is required;
3. Proven effectiveness in one-on-one qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship is required;
4. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, including strong presentation abilities is required;
5. Proven experience in budgeting, revenue tracking, and projections is required;
6. Strong technological skills, including familiarity with Salesforce or other relational databases are highly desirable;
7. Outstanding interpersonal skills for effective collaboration within the organization and with external partners is required.
8. Strong commitment to human rights and/or international issues, with the ability to represent and advocate for the mission and programs of the organization is required.
9. Entrepreneurial mindset with self-motivation, independence, and the ability to work both individually and as part of a Development team is required.
10. Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning and organizing skills and ability to work well under pressure are required.
11. Willingness to travel locally and internationally as required.

Other: The flexibility to work some evenings or weekends, as needed, related to event coordination is required. Applications for this position must possess valid Australian work authorization.
