Job Description

At Heart Aerospace we develop the ES-30, a regional hybrid-electric airplane with a capacity of 30 passengers, an electric zero-emission range of 200 km and an extended hybrid range of 400 km. Heart is targeting type certification of the ES-30 by the end of the decade.

We are now looking for a Senior Battery Design Engineer to join our Energy Storage Systems team in Gothenburg. Do you have experience in battery design and development and want to contribute to a more sustainable future?

Your mission

As a Senior Battery Design Engineer, your mission is to lead the design and development of advanced battery systems for the ES-30. This role involves designing, analyzing, and optimizing battery components and systems using CAD, FEM, and CFD tools to enhance performance, safety, and reliability. You will be at the forefront of innovation, driving the design, prototyping, and manufacturing processes to create next-generation energy storage solutions.

You will work closely with cross-functional teams and collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders to align on technical requirements, ensure compliance with industry standards, and deliver robust, efficient battery modules and packs.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the design and optimization of battery modules and packs using CAD software.
  • Perform FEM (Finite Element Method) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analyses to evaluate mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of battery components.
  • Develop and validate simulation models to predict battery performance, efficiency, and lifespan.
  • Collaborate with hardware, software, and systems engineering teams to integrate battery systems effectively.
  • Assess and mitigate risks associated with battery design, including safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee prototyping, testing, and manufacturing processes to ensure design intent and quality standards.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and internal stakeholders for component selection and material sourcing.
  • Conduct failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), reliability testing, and participate in design reviews.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, specifications, and reports.

You will be part of the Energy Storage Systems team and your place of work will be at our main office located in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Skills & Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in battery design, development, and analysis, preferably in the automotive or aerospace industry.
  • Proven experience in the design of battery modules and packs, including thermal management, mechanical design, and electrical integration.
  • Prominent use of the following programs: preferably CATIA, Siemens NX and Teamcenter or similar.
  • Solid understanding of electrochemical, thermal, and structural dynamics of battery systems.
  • Experience with electrical/electronic and battery safety standards and regulations (e.g., UL 1642, IEC 62133, ISO 26262).
  • Familiarity with aerospace qualification standards (e.g., DO-160 for environmental conditions and testing procedures, DO-311 for lithium battery design).
  • Knowledge of ARP4754A (Guidelines for Development of Civil Aircraft and Systems) and ARP4761 (Guidelines and Methods for Conducting the Safety Assessment Process on Civil Airborne Systems and Equipment).
  • Hands-on experience in prototyping and manufacturing processes is highly desired.
  • Strong project management, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and with external partners.
  • A passion for innovation and commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.
  • Passion for aircraft and electrification of the aviation industry.

Education

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, or a related field.

We recommend you submit your application in English as soon as possible as selection and interviews are held continually.
