Job Description

Want to be part of transforming road freight – for good? Einride is showing the world a new way to move, based on the latest digital, electric and autonomous technologies. Through freight capacity as a service, we enable businesses around the world to accelerate towards their sustainability goals.

Founded in 2016, Einride became the first company in the world to deploy a cab-less autonomous electric vehicle on a public road (Sweden, 2019). In 2022, we were the first to successfully operate such a vehicle on a US public road. Today our award-winning technology has been launched across 8 countries (and counting). Our clients are some of the world’s biggest shippers, including Fortune 500 companies. We are also operating Sweden’s largest truck dedicated public charging network and counting.

As Head of Safety, you will lead a global team responsible for the all aspects of safety of Einride’s autonomous business—including ensuring safety of our autonomous vehicles through development and operation, safety of our AI-based automated driving system human factors, remote operations, and monitoring and maintaining safety across our globally deployed fleet. You will partner closely with engineering, product, operations, global affairs, and external authorities, auditors and customers to ensure our systems are safe in operation, verifiable, and aligned with global standards and regulations in all markets we operate our vehicles.

The strategic component to this role is also substantial; you will set the long-term strategy for safety and establish the frameworks, structures, and evidence required for commercial-scale autonomy, through the safety case and safety management system for our organization.

You will:

  • Lead the design, implementation, and continual improvement of ERA’s Safety Management System (SMS), aligned with global best practices used in aviation, automotive, and other safety-critical industries. This includes defining safety policies and objectives, risk management, safety assurance, safety promotion and safety culture.
  • Own the end-to-end safety case for autonomous operations, aligned with global standards such as UL 4600, ISO 26262, and relevant current and emerging regulations in UNECE markets, US, and GCC markets.
  • Establish internal and external safety governance structures, including review boards, supporting processes, and escalation pathways to ensure consistent decision-making across all markets.
  • Partner with hardware, software and system engineering teams to define high-level safety requirements across the ADS stack, vehicle platform, remote operations, cloud systems, AI/ML components, and operating environments
  • Oversee the software release safety assessment process to independently validate and confirm readiness of each release from our high-velocity software machine, ensuring an acceptable level of risk is achieved and key assets and evidences conform to technical standards including ISO26262, ISO/PAS21448 and more.
  • Ensure that safety architecture, redundancy concepts, ODD definitions, and fallback strategies are robust, auditable, and ready for regulatory review.
  • Define operational procedures, operator requirements, training and certification programs, and safety monitoring functions.
  • Oversee safety incident response program, field issue analysis and escalation, and continuous fleet operational monitoring to deliver improvement through deployment.
  • Scope, plan, and direct the execution of safety audits and third party assessments in service of unlocking new permits, markets and customer deployments.

We expect you to:

  • Have 15+ years experience in a highly-regulated, safety-critical industry (automotive, aviation, aerospace, robotics, nuclear, rail, or similar).
  • Have 10+ years of experience in automated systems or autonomous vehicles, including hands-on leadership in engineering development.
  • Bring deep expertise in safety management systems, and has implemented or operated SMS structures at scale.
  • Have direct experience operating or supporting large, complex, distributed fleets in real-world environments.
  • Be highly proficient with ISO 26262, ISO/PAS21448, ISO 8800, UL 4600, and AV-specific safety standards and methods.
  • Be familiar with global regulatory frameworks, including UNECE R155 & R156, and U.S. FMVSS implications for ADS deployments.
  • Have a proven track record of leading high-performing global teams, ideally across engineering and operations.

This is a full time position based in the US or Sweden. You will be part of a truly diverse, high performing team with a common passion for sustainability and making things happen in an innovative way. We recommend that you submit your application as soon as possible since selection and interviews are held continually.

At Einride, we are innovators, building solutions the world has never seen before – but urgently needs. That’s why we take action, and it’s why we are always eager to be challenged. We know that our best innovations come from having a diverse mix of people, including those of different experiences, career paths, and walks of life. By coming together and sharing our perspectives openly – by disagreeing, discussing, and committing – we deliver greater impact.

Please note that as part of our standard recruitment process, we conduct a background control on the final candidate for this role. This may include verification of education, employment history, any relevant professional certifications or other information that may be of our interest.
