Project & Risk Controls Manager

Blykalla is scaling quickly in order to industrialize our small modular reactor (SMR) concept. If you are passionate about nuclear technology and want to make a significant impact, join us!

We are expanding our US program team and hiring an experienced Project & Risk Controls Manager to anchor execution of our Fjäll program.

This role is the control center of a first-of-its-kind nuclear development program. You will own the integrated schedule, risk framework, and program reporting systems that keep a complex, multi-disciplinary effort aligned, transparent, and on track.

If you have a strong background in project controls on capital-intensive infrastructure programs and thrive in environments where structure must be built – not inherited – we want to hear from you.

About Blykalla

Blykalla is developing next-generation nuclear energy through an innovative Small Modular Reactor (SMR) design based on advanced fuels, materials, and reactor technologies.

As Sweden’s only SMR developer, our mission is to enable safe, scalable, and carbon-free energy for heavy industry and beyond. Our technology leverages uranium nitride fuel and lead cooling – unlocking unique engineering challenges and opportunities across the nuclear fuel cycle

Our US development program, Fjäll, is building Blykalla's first reactor on American soil, targeting first criticality in 2027/2028 at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). We are standing up this program from scratch, which means every hire matters and every role is foundational.

Your assignment and mission

As Project & Risk Controls Manager, you will own the controls function for the Fjäll US program. You will build and maintain the program infrastructure that provides clear, accurate, and timely visibility into schedule, risk, and program health across all workstreams—from licensing and engineering to construction, supply chain, and site development.

Reporting to the Program Director, this is a high-ownership role where you will build the controls function from the ground up, establish the tools and operating rhythms the program depends on, and continuously evolve them as the program scales toward construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and maintain the Fjäll US Integrated Master Schedule (IMS), incorporating inputs from all workstreams including licensing, engineering, construction contracting, supply chain, and site development

  • Lead program risk management: facilitate regular reviews, maintain the risk register, track mitigation actions, and surface emerging risks to the Program Director

  • Establish and manage core program controls infrastructure: decision log, action tracker, open questions register, and assumption register

  • Lead monthly program reviews and produce executive- and Board-level reporting that translates complex program status into clear, decision-relevant insights

  • Identify schedule risks, critical path threats, and cross-workstream dependencies; escalate findings with recommended mitigations

  • Implement and continuously improve program controls tools and processes as the program scales – including the transition from early-stage tooling toward formal systems such as Primavera P6

  • Support the Program Director with materials for DOE submissions, INL engagements, Board presentations, and strategic partner interactions

  • Support development of cost estimates and change management processes as the program matures toward construction

Who you are

You will be the person who brings structure to a fast-moving, high-stakes program. You will work closely with the Program Director and interface daily with workstream leads across licensing, engineering, construction contracting, supply chain, and site development. You need to be credible with technical people, disciplined with data, and proactive about surfacing what others might miss.

  • Degree in Engineering, Project Management, or equivalent

  • Significant experience in project controls, program management, or PMO roles on complex capital programs - nuclear strongly preferred; defense, oil & gas, or large civil infrastructure also considered

  • Demonstrated proficiency in IMS development and scheduling tools (Primavera P6, MS Project, or equivalent)

  • Strong working knowledge of risk management frameworks and risk register management; familiarity with Earned Value Management (EVM) and cost control practices

  • Proven ability to build program infrastructure from scratch in early-stage organizations

  • Exceptional ability to synthesize complex status across workstreams into clear, decision-relevant reporting for executive and Board audiences

  • Self-directed and comfortable operating with limited oversight

  • US work authorization required

If you're not sure you meet every requirement, we encourage you to apply

Location

Austin, TX, with regular travel to Idaho Falls, ID

Compensation and Benefits

We offer a competitive compensation package reflecting the seniority and strategic importance of this role.

Base salary: $115k–$145k annually, depending on location, experience, and background

In addition, you can expect:

  • Equity participation

  • Comprehensive benefits through Deel, including medical, dental, and vision insurance and 401(k)

The salary range reflects our target bands for Idaho Falls and Austin. The final offer will be determined based on qualifications and location.

So, what do you think?

Joining our team means owning the heartbeat of a first-of-its-kind nuclear development program in the United States. The controls infrastructure you build will directly shape how well Blykalla executes, manages risk, and reports to its stakeholders for years to come. If you are ready to build something that matters – and build it from scratch – apply now.

We are proud to foster an inclusive workplace free from discrimination. We strongly believe that diversity of experience, perspectives, and background makes us better — and we encourage everyone to apply.
