Mechanical Equipment & Piping Engineer

Blykalla is scaling quickly in order to industrialize our small modular reactor (SMR) concept. If you are passionate about nuclear technology and want to make a significant impact, join us!

What we do at Blykalla

Blykalla is a Swedish deep-tech company at the forefront of the nuclear industry, pioneering the development of small modular reactors that provide clean, safe, and reliable energy. Thanks to lead-cooling, we achieve high safety in a very compact format, allowing for a simple and cost-effective design that can be mass-produced. Our unique reactor design will provide safe and green baseload energy that perfectly complements solar and wind power.

What you’ll get to do

You own mechanical equipment and piping engineering for assigned plant areas, systems, or work packages within Plant Engineering and make sure equipment, piping, valves, supports, and mechanical interfaces support safe, constructable, maintainable, and efficient plant delivery. You turn requirements into practical engineering solutions, coordinate interfaces with other engineering areas and suppliers, and make sure deliverables are complete, consistent, and issued on time. You support the project through design, procurement support, construction support, and handover to commissioning and operations. You also help shape a plant-as-a-product mindset through standardization, modular design, DfMA, and design choices that improve fabrication, assembly, construction, and commissioning.

You are responsible for contributing to Blykalla’s plant engineering capability by incorporating the areas below into your daily work:

Technical ownership and planning

  • Take ownership of the mechanical equipment and piping scope for the balance of plant.

  • Plan deliverables, priorities, reviews, and resource needs for your scope.

  • Set clear expectations on quality, interface handling, and schedule commitments.

Design basis and technical execution

  • Define and maintain mechanical design criteria, specifications, equipment datasheets, piping classes, design basis, and modularization / DfMA principles for your scope.

  • Confident to work directly in modeling tools such as Plant 3D, Revit, Caesar, AutoPipe.

  • Lead design of equipment, piping systems, valves, supports, skids, and package interfaces, with attention to pressure boundary integrity, fabrication, transport, lifting, and assembly constraints for modular delivery.

  • Review calculations, specifications, reports, drawings, model outputs, and supplier documents and make sure they are traceable to requirements and fit for issue.

Interfaces and integration

  • Coordinate interfaces with relevant disciplines and functions.

  • Resolve issues related to access, maintainability, temporary conditions, constructability, and operations.

  • Support three-dimensional model reviews and make sure the physical arrangement can be fabricated, installed, pressure-tested, commissioned, maintained, and modified.

Suppliers and external partners

  • Prepare technical input to requests for quotation, bid evaluations, requisitions, and supplier requirements.

  • Review supplier and contractor documents, including fabrication, modularization, and means and methods inputs where mechanical and piping review is needed, and close comments in a timely way.

Project delivery and change control

  • Give reliable input to estimates, schedules, risk reviews, and change requests.

  • Escalate technical risks early and propose practical mitigation actions.

  • Provide timely support to design reviews, safety reviews, constructability reviews, means and methods reviews, RFI responses, site queries, and field changes.

  • Ensure specifications are fit for purpose and designed quantities are practically minimized so as to provide maximum value to the project.

Team development and ways of working

  • Mentor engineers and designers, share lessons learned, and improve methods, templates, checklists, standards, and design practices.

  • Help build a mechanical equipment and piping capability that can scale with Blykalla’s project needs and support a plant-as-a-product mindset through standardization, modular design, DfMA, and design for construction and commissioning.
