About the job

You will be the Mechanical Cell Design Engineer responsible for pushing forward the design and development of our next-gen sodium-ion batteries using an advanced and sustainable chemistry. You will lead technical development projects in terms of cell performance, design, safety and system integration. This role is located in a cross-functional, fast-paced and project-based environment and you will collaborate closely with the Materials and Process team as well as supporting functions such as Supply Chain to ensure the best overall product design.

Northvolt's sodium-ion battery project aims to reinvent how a battery is designed and performs and thus requires an entrepreneurial spirit and innovative mindset to approach new problems which do not have a solution yet. You are expected to be very creative in finding solutions to push both yourself and your colleagues from various teams to ensure progress is made in the project. You need to be up to speed on constantly changing circumstances and evaluate proposed solutions from different stakeholders perspectives, making non-biased decisions that are the most beneficial overall.

About the team
You will join a fairly new effort and thus a small but dedicated team which will grow with the progress of this project. This role gives you the opportunity to be part of an exciting new project from the beginning and allows you to grow and take on additional responsibility fast. The team includes cell design engineers, material engineers, supply chain experts and technical project managers, however, this project requires cross-functional contribution across the entire organization which will be one of the main responsibilities of this role. In this position, you will join a passionate team that is driven by creating an even more sustainable product which will make a significant impact for Northvolt and the transition towards a greener future.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Create research plans, perform experiments, analyze data, present results
  • Lead technical projects on cell design and drive product development initiatives
  • Develop and review mechanical drawings and models with computer aided tools
  • Define standard test procedures for product validation
  • Lead design reviews within the mechanical and structural analysis area and include your findings to create better products
